The Lowsonford, Rowington and District Horticultural Association is a not for profit organisation that aims to encourage local people to grow flowers and produce for enjoyment and consumption. Each year the Association holds a spring Daffodil Show and a summer Flower Show.
Annual Village Show (including the Flower Show)
The Village Show is an opportunity to enjoy the best of an English Summer.
The Flower Show is a great way to be inspired about growing your own fruit, vegetables and flowers, making your own jams, cakes, or floral arrangements or just enjoying the products of other people’s creative talents. To help encourage new entrants to the Flower Show there are no longer any entry fees. Full details of how to enter all the classes and tips on what the judges are looking for can be found on this web site.
As well as the Flower Show there are lots of activities for the whole family and stalls to buy books, DVDs, fresh vegetables and plants, and no shortage of tea, cake and ice cream when you need a rest, with live music provided by the Shirley Band.
The show normally alternates between Rowington and Lowsonford and the most recent show was held at Shakespeare Hall in Rowington on Saturday 7 August 2010. We welcomed back some familiar displays including an active bee colony from the Solihull Beekeepers and exemplary vegetable exhibits grown by Mr Geoff Owen. There were also a number of new participants in 2010 including the RSPB and local charity Red Balloon.
Spring Flower Show and Social Evening (formerly the Daffodil Show)
History
The Lowsonford Flower Show began in 1946 to encourage local residents to grow better vegetables and flowers and to improve other home produce such as cakes and preserves. During the Second World War home grown vegetables had been a vital part of the nation's diet and, when rationing ended in the 1950's, people continued to be interested in producing quality produce in their gardens and allotments. The Lowsonford Flower Show soon grew to include Rowington and other nearby areas and more classes were introduced to cover a wide range of interests. In 2006 the Flower Show celebrated its diamond anniversary.
