Annual Dinner and Prize Giving 2008 - John Glover's Ode to the Under 14s

An Ode to the Under 14s

The Under 14s, what a team, they’ve been great!
From a squad of eleven each week we chose eight.
Nobody liked to be dropped – ‘twas a shame
We couldn’t take all of the lads to each game.

First league match at Rowington’s beautiful ground,
A little bit nervous, too quiet, not a sound.
But we went into bat and played sensible cricket,
Annihilating Tanworth, taking eleven of their wickets.

Next came our neighbours from Hockley and Dorridge,
We should have reduced them to cold runny porridge.
With wickets from Richardson, Turrell and Wood,
We didn’t play well but we did just come good.

Then on to the ground of Rag-e-ly Hall,
Where we batted so well till our wickets did fall.
A comfortable win in the end, which was thrilling,
Thanks to the bowling of Ostler and Skilling.

At the end of half term we were five players short,
Four wickets in four overs left Rowington fraught
So our first loss, to Kineton, by only three runs.
We’ll forget about that one so don’t blame your sons.

And so on to Wellesbourne, the top of the pile,
Where Rowington started to play with more style.
Losing only two wickets and taking out four,
We notched up some runs but Wellesbourne scored more.

And then for the big one ‘gainst Dorridge and Knowle.
To beat our big rivals was everyone’s goal.
They hit 313 and we thought we would die,
But we got one more than them and made them all cry.

So into the play offs with the teams from south west
We had to play Fladbury, not an easy test.
But a draw and a win saw us finish in style
Finishing third overall making everyone smile.

The Under 14s. What a team, they’ve been great.
Next season we’re playing with eleven not eight.
That’s Glover, Jones, Richardson, Ostler, Skil-ling,
Curtiss, Hill, Webster, Wood, Turrell and King.

The future of Rowington has never looked brighter.
Each one of these lads is a natural born fighter.
They’re hitting it harder, they’re bowling it faster
As they wait for the firsts to be put out to pasture.

The End
