Under 16s v Wellesbourne
Under 16s v Wellesbourne
As usual the unassuming Under 16s had us all on the edge of our seats as they entertained Wellesbourne at Rowington in the first league match of the season. Having been knocked out in the semi-finals by the Wellesbourne boys last year and only taking 3 wickets in 2 games, nobody was expecting it to be easy. Added to this, Matty Williams pulled out with an injury and Luke Richardson was unable to play due to illness. (Get well soon both of you.) Charlie Meadows and Fergus Sheridan kindly stepped in to fill their shoes at the last minute - thanks guys.
Skipper Sam lost the toss and Wellesbourne elected to bat - something which they probably regretted later. Rowington's bowling was superb with Sam Turrell and Dale Glover opening and, after a few shaky wides, they settled into their rhythm, Sam getting 13 - 1 off 3 and Dale 2 - 0 off 3. Callum Curtiss (16 - 1 off 4 (whoops!)) and Tom Webster (23 - 2 off 3) continued the good run. Ollie Brown (17 - 0 off 3) and Sam Ostler (14 - 2 off 3) dealt with some of the more impressive Wellesbourne batsmen and Little Fergus bowled the last over getting 1 - 0.
Wellesbourne finished 92 for 7.
Would the Junior Rs be able to keep their heads and do the impossible? The answer - a resounding yes! Ollie Brown and Sam Ostler opened the batting and quickly settled in, looking like they would both comfortably reach their 25. Unfortunately, Ollie (22) was caught after hitting a high shot to the boundary and Sam was bowled on 21. Callum went for 3 and Ben Skillings was caught on 20. But Dale (23 not out) and Ollie King (2 not out) were on hand to finish the game off with nearly 3 overs to spare.
Rowington finished 96 for 4.
A fantastic result boys and a really impressive team performance. Excellent wicket keeping from Ollie and 3 solid catches from Tom, Sammy T and Dale. Good fielding all round and great throws from the boundary, particularly from Fergus and Ben Webster.
Next week we are at home against Kineton - never played them before so it will be interesting. After such a great start we are all looking forward to it!
