Annual Dinner and Prize Giving 2008 - Steve Jay's Tribute to Scott Rogers
Scott Rogers
He's the Rowington captain, his name is Scott Rogers
He's the one responsible for our team of old codgers
He has a shirt for batting, a bowling one too
He likes to look smart, he thinks he's one of the chosen few
He bowls at the start and really tries his best,
But when the ball goes to the boundary it's time to take a rest
He comes back on when the batsmen aren't so good,
He gets out all the rabbits, hence his nickname's Elmer Fudd
He has to be on his guard to put up with all the wit
But early in the season his game was really **** poor
He couldn't buy a wicket and the runs came really slow
With scores of 0 and 0 and very few wickets to show
A blisteringly hot day at Ebrington and his dummy was on the floor
After umpiring 30 overs he refused to do any more
His confidence seemed to be at an all time low
So we quickly changed his nickname to James Bond's Dr No
But when the sun shone down on the Theatre of Dreams
He took out his frustration on all the other teams
Hitting fifty after fifty and nearly getting a ton
Wickets falling regularly, now he was having fun
He guided us up into the promotion places
A team of aged players, with a couple of new faces
An average age of 44, he couldn't really ask for more
Although a few of us ended games lying on the floor
But when he clicked into gear he made our team gel
Playing for each other, we gave the opposition hell
And with his words of encouragement plus the odd angry shout
Our season of promotion was never really in any doubt
Sometimes he wonders why we often deride him in a season of such fruition
But you only have to look at him to see he gives us so much ammunition
With his silly little beard he looks more like a musketeer
It's hard to take him seriously when he looks like such a bloody queer
He has a strange dress sense, it's a little bit amiss
The way he turns up sometimes makes it easy to take the ...mickey
The game at Long Itch and he turns up dressed in denim, he must have had his reasons
But we all thought he looked more like Shakin' Stevens
The only good thing was that he didn't burst into song
'cos if you'd seen him on the Karaoke you wouldn't have stayed for long
But what a great captain and a really true friend
I hope he plays for Rowington until the very end
In a season where promotion really made us beam
His name is Scott Rogers, the captain of our team.
